Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember's alpha demo shows stronger open-world design than Nioh 3
Hands-on time with Wo Long 2's public alpha reveals a more engaging open-world approach, with allied NPCs, morale-reducing flag spots, and up to two companion warriors joining your journey through the Battle of Changban.

Koei Tecmo's public alpha demo for Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember highlights an open-world design that stands apart from similar titles. The demo tasks players with helping Liu Bei find a safe escape route during the Battle of Changban, with a boss fight against the monkey-like Wuzhiqi at its conclusion.
The alpha build introduces meaningful companion systems absent from comparable games. Players can now invite up to two allied warriors to accompany their avatar, which adds dialogue at story points and quests. The demo also populates safe camps with allied officers and soldiers, creating a sense of inhabited space. Side areas task players with rescuing allied soldiers who can later join larger fights.
Exploration carries tangible rewards. Flag spots scattered throughout the field reduce enemy morale levels, while other allies and open maps point players toward areas of gameplay interest. This contrasts sharply with other open-world action RPGs at similar development phases, which have historically felt sparse and lifeless.
Combat introduces three kinds of Insight parries that let players deflect powerful attacks signaled by red glows. The Insight Jump mechanic includes two variations that trigger differently depending on whether players are airborne or grounded, though the requirement that only specific parry types work against each attack adds complexity to the system.
Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember releases March 4 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. The public alpha demo remains available until September 30. Players who defeat the Wuzhiqi boss by that date will receive the Fledgling Phoenix Helmet in the full release.
