How to find and craft all five witcher armor sets in The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3 offers five distinct witcher armor sets, each tailored to different playstyles and progression points. Whether you prefer heavy defense, agile offense, or sign-focused builds, these school-specific sets provide unique stat bonuses and passive abilities that shape how you approach combat.

Griffin Armor: The Medium Sign-Focused Set

The Griffin armor is a medium witcher gear set primarily designed to buff sign power. Its passive turns your Aard sign into an area-of-effect attack that reduces incoming damage, and further increases sign intensity when you're standing inside it. The set requires level 11 to equip and consists of four armor pieces, two swords, and no crossbow.

Find the Griffin armor diagrams in Dragonslayer's Grotto in east Velen, northwest of Downwarren. Head inside and fight through wraiths, then use Aard to blow open a cracked wall on the left side of the corridor. Push through a poisoned gas chamber (ignore enemies if you prefer) to reach a rock barrier you can blast open. Defeat the ekimmara vampire in the next room and grab the armor diagrams from the chest on the platform above.

The Griffin Silver Sword is in Lornruk lighthouse in west Velen, north of Heatherton. Expect to fight a wyvern and navigate underwater sections with drowners. The Griffin Steel Sword is at Hindhold watchtower in north Velen, directly east of the Border Post, guarded by endrega workers and warriors. Read Witcher George's Journal (found with the armor diagrams) to unlock these sword locations.

Upgrade diagrams come from buying Edwin Greloff's maps. Enhanced upgrades require his first and second maps from Midcopse's armorer in west Velen. Superior upgrades need his third map from Hierarch Square's armorer in Novigrad. Mastercrafted upgrades require his fourth map from Éibhear Hattori after completing the Of Swords and Dumplings quest, located northwest of Novigrad's Glory Gate.

Feline Armor: The Light Glass Cannon Set

Feline armor is a light set that sacrifices damage resistance for attack power. Its passive makes strong attacks buff fast attack damage, and rear attacks hit harder while stunning opponents. This set requires level 17 and includes four armor pieces, two swords, and a crossbow.

The Feline armor diagrams are in a cave on the north side of Temple Isle in Novigrad. You'll need Keira Metz's Eye of Nehaleni from her questline to dispel an illusory rock blocking the entrance. Head to the northwesternmost house on Temple Isle and follow the trail down into the cave. Defeat or skip the golem, then navigate left through a tunnel to a circular room with statues. Pull the lever beside each statue to make them face inward and open a central pool filled with drowners. Dive quickly to the bottom to grab the key from a corpse, staying close to the wall to minimize damage. Use the key to unlock the door behind the golem and defeat Mad Kiyan, the crazed witcher inside, to claim the armor diagrams.

Read the laboratory log on Kiyan's body to locate the Feline Crossbow, found in the wreck of the Flying Stag ship on an island off west Novigrad, west of Drahim Castle. The chest also contains Professor Sigismund Glogger's notes with sword locations. The Feline Steel Sword is in Drahim Castle's basement, just south of Novigrad's Glory Gate, with bandits at the entrance. The Feline Silver Sword is in Est Tayiar, northeast of Oxenfurt and east of the Vegelbud Residence. Use Aard to destroy the right wall as you enter the ruin to find this diagram.

Enhance your Feline set by buying Adalbert Kermith's maps. Enhanced upgrades need his first and second maps from Blackbough's merchant, west of Crow's Perch. Superior upgrades require his third map from the Crow's Perch quartermaster. Mastercrafted upgrades need his fourth map from Lindenvale's armorer, east of Crow's Nest.

Wolven Armor: The Medium All-Rounder Set

Wolven armor functions as a versatile medium set, buffing sign intensity, attack power, and adrenaline point gain. Its passive increases sword damage against bleeding enemies. The set includes four armor pieces, two swords, and no crossbow. It requires level 14 to equip.

Find the Wolven armor diagrams at an old signal tower just south of Kaer Mohern keep. Climb inside, read Hieronymous's note in a chest at the top, then activate a teleportation crystal on the right side of the far wall using Aard. Exit back through the broken wall to the right, jump on the north scaffolding, and locate a second crystal on a ledge. Return inside and place this crystal in the left housing before the far wall opening, then activate it with Aard to jump into a cave with a wraith. Defeat the wraith and loot the armor diagrams.

Notes on the body unlock the Wolven Steel Sword location at the Bastion directly west of Kaer Mohern, on a body in the burnt shacks. Prepare to fight wraiths. The Wolven Silver Sword is at the Ruined Watchtower north of the keep along the lake's west side, also guarded by wraiths. The enhanced steel sword diagram is also here.

Upgrade with notes from various sources. Enhanced upgrades need well-preserved notes (boots, armor, silver sword) from Éibhear Hattori after completing Of Swords and Dumplings, and slightly torn notes (gloves, trousers, steel sword) from Lindenvale's armorer. Superior upgrades require damp, moldy notes from Kaer Trolde's armorer in Skellige and heavily faded notes from Hierarch Square's armorer in Novigrad. Mastercrafted upgrades need worn out and faded notes from Éibhear Hattori and notes on parchment from Kaer Trolde's blacksmith.

Ursine Armor: The Heavy Defense Set

Ursine armor is the only heavy witcher gear set, offering incredibly high damage resistance. It consists of four armor pieces, two swords, and a crossbow. The set requires level 20 to equip and is consistently popular for its defensive capabilities.

Locate the Ursine armor diagrams in a ruined castle on Urialla Isle in northeast Skellige, near the top of the Yngvar's Fang trail. From Urialla Harbor, take the northeast path and go right at the fork to reach the trail fast travel. Kill the rabid rock troll ahead, then fight sirens along the cliffside path. When the trail collapses, slide down to the broken stone walkway and jump across to enter the fort through a wooden door. Go down the spiral staircase on the left, reach the end of the corridor, turn right and pull the lever to open cell doors and spawn wraiths. Drop through the first cell on your left, follow the path past the next wraith, and climb through a broken wall hole into the throne room. The diagram chest is right of the throne, but retrieving it and pulling the exit lever spawns three wraiths.

Read the Chronicles of Clan Tuirseach in the diagram chest to unlock weapon locations. The Ursine Crossbow is in Siren's Cave on Svorlag in northwest Skellige, past the Old Watchtower in the south, with many drowners. The Ursine Silver Sword is at Fort Etnir ruins in north-central Skellige, east and north of Rogne, guarded by two gargoyles. Knight Chalmir's Letter, found with the silver sword diagram, reveals the Ursine Steel Sword location in a ruined inn basement south of the central island, southeast of Fyresdal. Expect sirens and basement wraiths.

All Ursine upgrade diagrams come from Ibrahim Savi's maps sold at the Kaer Trolde Armorer. Buy his first, second, third, and fourth maps to unlock all enhanced, superior, and mastercrafted upgrade diagrams via quest markers.

Crafting and Grandmaster Upgrades

Forge any basic witcher set at armorers in Crow's Perch, Novigrad, or Kaer Trolde. For grandmaster versions of all five sets, travel to Toussaint in the Blood and Wine DLC and speak to Lazare Lafargue in his armor shop in south Beauclair to start the Master Master Master Master quest.
