Global virtual reality headset shipments declined by 18 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, according to data from Counterpoint Research. This downturn comes as virtual reality hardware remains an expensive niche in the consumer market, influenced by a shortage of major software releases. For instance, Valve's Half-Life: Alyx remains an unsurpassed high bar six years after its initial launch.

Pricing pressures are also affecting the market. Counterpoint Research highlighted Meta's decision to raise the prices of the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S due to a memory supply crisis, which added further pressure to a cooling market. Currently, the Meta Quest 3 costs at least $600, while the budget Meta Quest 3S is priced at $350. These broader economic and hardware manufacturing challenges may present hurdles for Valve and the potentially imminent release of its Steam Frame virtual reality headset, especially given historical pricing issues with the Steam Machine.

Despite the consumer decline, virtual reality hardware continues to see steady demand from the enterprise sector. Businesses and government entities are typically less price-sensitive when adopting digital twin and spatial computing capabilities to address operational challenges. Furthermore, growth is expected from the robotics industry, particularly in China, where virtual reality headsets are utilized for data collection and remote robot control.

In contrast to virtual reality, augmented reality devices experienced substantial growth. Global shipments of augmented reality devices surged 138 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, driven by new product launches, international expansion, and promotional campaigns in China. Meta maintains a dominant position in the broader market, holding a 54 percent share of the augmented reality and virtual reality original equipment manufacturer market during the same period.
