20 Years Later, Veteran WoW Director Says Players Outsmarted Him Completely in Ahn'Qiraj

Former Blizzard game director Wyatt Cheng recently reflected on the intricate design challenges he faced approximately 20 years ago during the release of the Ahn'Qiraj raid in World of Warcraft, specifically concerning The Prophet Skeram encounter. Skeram was designed to split into illusions at 75%, 50%, and 25% health thresholds. Cheng intended for the real Skeram to only be distinguishable from copies by having double the health pool, meaning illusions would drop in health faster under even damage-per-second rates.
The original design envisioned raids coordinating via voice chat to track which targets were losing health faster, warning teammates not to accidentally trigger additional health thresholds and summon more copies before managing the active ones. However, that strategy did not play out as intended due to numerous simple ways players could immediately spot the real boss. Cheng noted that his initial iteration literally included the text 'Pet of Skeram' under the copies' names, while testing revealed other exploits such as user interface modifications reading creature identification tags and mismatched localization strings.
Reflecting on the ensuing design arms race, Cheng recalled trying various methods to obscure the real target. Modern online guides indicate that players eventually utilized tactics such as sending a hunter pet after Skeram before the split so the pet remained locked onto the authentic boss, or using mana-burn abilities because the copies spawned with full mana while the main boss did not. Despite the ease with which players bypassed his intended mechanics, Cheng took a humble stance on the matter, concluding that when players outsmart a developer rather than using genuine bugs or exploits, it simply belongs in the history books.
