Valve Releases SteamVR 2.17 Update Ahead of Steam Frame Headset Launch

Valve has released a sizeable update to SteamVR, bringing the software out of beta and paving the way for the upcoming launch of its standalone virtual reality headset, the Steam Frame. The new 2.17 update is now available for all users following an initial beta testing phase.

The latest update focuses on delivering a more virtual reality-native user experience by introducing a refreshed interface for the SteamVR Dashboard. According to the official patch notes, users who opt into the Steam Client Beta gain access to Steam Deck-style Quick Access controls. The update also streamlines access to features such as achievements, guides, and notes.

Additional improvements include easier overlay management, more detailed battery information, and direct brightness controls. These software refinements arrive as Valve prepares to launch the Steam Frame, a standalone device designed to stream and natively play items from a user library. Valve also recently published a Great on Frame webpage highlighting optimized virtual reality and non-virtual reality titles that will function on the hardware. Specific launch dates and pricing details have not yet been announced.
