Valve Clarifies Steam Deck 2 Plans Amid Global RAM Shortage
Valve addresses how the global RAM crisis impacts the development of the Steam Deck 2, confirming that internal plans remain unchanged while performance goals stay strict.

Valve has addressed how the ongoing RAM crisis and rising component prices affect the development of the Steam Deck 2. Despite component prices surging by 200% to 300% in certain cases, Valve stated that its overall development plans and internal goals for the upcoming handheld hardware have not been disrupted by current economic conditions.
Speaking with IGN, Valve developer Pierre-Loupo Griffais discussed whether hardware shortages and other economic factors have impacted their ongoing work. Griffais emphasized that the company maintains its previous stance regarding performance benchmarks for future hardware iterations.
"We've talked before about how we want to make sure there's a very delineated performance improvement for something like a future Steam Deck, and I think we're still looking at it in the same way," Griffais said. He noted that the process involves evaluating current market conditions to determine the appropriate timing for delivery, while keeping product goals consistent.
Griffais did not confirm any specific release timeline for the Steam Deck 2. Valve has never established an official release target for the device, though external tech insiders previously claimed the company was aiming for a 2028 release window. Valve has previously maintained that any future hardware revision must provide a true generational leap in performance over the current model rather than a minor refresh.
While internal development goals remain steady, pricing and hardware availability have shifted over the past year. Valve previously ended production of the most affordable entry-level Steam Deck model and adjusted prices upwards by as much as $300 on certain configurations. The company continues to monitor market conditions as it develops future hardware options for players.
