Valor Mortis launches into October's crowded release window alongside blockbuster competitors

The first-person soulslike from Ghostrunner creators releases October 13 at $40, positioning itself as an alternative to major fall releases rather than competing with GTA 6 in November.

October has become a release bottleneck as publishers avoid launching near Grand Theft Auto 6's November debut. The month will see Ace Combat 8, Gears of War: E-Day, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Modern Warfare 4 all release, alongside anticipated titles like a new Hellraiser game, Silver Pines, Jonathan Blow's next project, Planet Zoo 2, a Tales of Eternia remaster, and Enshrouded's 1.0 launch.

Into this crowded field comes Valor Mortis, a first-person soulslike from the creators of Ghostrunner. The game recently received positive reception from a demo, particularly for its approach to first-person melee combat. Valor Mortis launches October 13 at $40.

Publisher Lyrical Games is embracing the competitive October landscape rather than waiting for clearer runway. CEO Blake Rochkind told The Game Business: "By virtue of the development schedule, the cards we've been dealt is that we are one of the only new IPs launching this fall. We are pretty confident in Valor Mortis. But ultimately, the worst thing we could do is not push our chips in and say, 'We want this to be a game that you can pick up alongside these other great games.'"

The $40 price point reflects this strategy. Rochkind explained: "A developer I spoke to recently had a lot of success with a game priced at $30, which would probably be $40 today. One thing they said that really stuck with me is: 'We never regretted being an 'and' game. We never regretted pricing our game as something that you can pick up alongside other games.' Going with this price point will help us be an 'and' game."

The decision to launch in October rather than wait for November signals confidence in Valor Mortis's ability to coexist with established franchises, even as publishers largely avoid GTA 6's gravitational pull in the following month.
