Valheim finally adds remappable dodge key after five years of player requests
A new patch brings long-awaited keybinding options to Valheim, including the ability to remap dodge to a single key, along with hotbar and radial wheel rebinding. The update also addresses performance improvements, bug fixes, and platform-specific issues

Valheim players can now remap their dodge key to a single button after five years of asking. The survival game's latest patch grants the ability to bind dodge to an alternate configuration, ending the requirement to simultaneously hold block (mouse 2), press jump (space bar), and choose a direction (WASD) on keyboard, or use a stick and button combo on controller.
The dodge mechanic matters in Valheim. Players face tree-swinging trolls, ice-spitting dragons, and fire-breathing skeletal demigods where quick evasion often determines survival. The absence of a single-tap dodge option has been a consistent frustration throughout early access.
Beyond dodge rebinding, the patch adds keybinding support for hotbar items (beyond the standard 1-8 keys) and radial wheel controls. An accessibility toggle now allows players to switch between holding and toggling the block button. The intro cinematic, which arrived with Valheim 1.0 last week, can now be skipped via a gameplay settings toggle.
Combat improvements include better player rotation snapping toward intended attack direction when the "attack towards look direction" option is enabled. Gamepad controls received adjustments: Motion Sensor and Sheath keybinds were swapped, returning Sheath to its original binding, with Motion Sensor now accessible via alt-key plus Sheath button.
The patch contains significant performance work. GPU performance improved when tessellation is disabled, heightmap shadows now calculate more accurately with lower performance cost, and main menu particle systems saw optimization. Switch 2 received multiple GPU performance improvements specifically.
Bug fixes address a range of issues. The cheat-flagging system, which had mislabeled some players and resources as cheated, received further corrections. Player characters no longer mistakenly get marked as temporary cheaters, preventing monster drops from being incorrectly flagged as cheated. Cheated stackable items no longer stack with regular items, preventing uncheated stacks from becoming corrupted.
Gameplay fixes include improved PlayerBase effect on build pieces to better block enemies, accurate stick input pre-processing that was 30% too slow diagonally, and prevention of Jotun puffs and Magecaps from respawning. Grappling hook secondary attacks on creatures now function correctly.
Platform-specific fixes target display issues. Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 no longer experience TV output switching from 120 Hz to 60 Hz while accessing the virtual keyboard or home menu during balanced graphics preset gameplay, which had caused black screens. PlayStation 5 now properly unlocks the "Stronger Together" achievement.
Terrain and multiplayer stability improved through biomedata caching fixes that prevented invalid cache states from blocking remote server access. A bug where terrain modifications caused performance and portal issues in multiplayer has been resolved. Deep North and Winding Tunnels music received better balance and loop improvements to remove clicking. Mörkhalla now plays correct music with better location music mixing overall.
Additional fixes include corrected Deep North battleaxe tool tier for tree cutting, persistent placeable boulders that break when ground disappears, updated Ballista trophy compatibility with new Deep North enemies plus Bjorn and Vile, Helmet of the Protector craft fix via Black Forge, and achievement unlock corrections for "No time for snoozing," "The Homesteader," and "The Architect."
The patch rolled out on PC immediately. Developers note the update "will require a few days to get uploaded to all platforms."
