U.S. gaming market revenue fell 10% in July amid console sales collapse
The American gaming market contracted sharply in July 2026, with total revenue dropping to $4.5 billion, down 10% year-over-year. Console hardware sales plummeted 29% to their worst performance since 2020, driven by declining Nintendo Switch 2 momentum

The U.S. gaming market experienced a significant slowdown in July 2026, according to data from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella. Total revenue for the month reached $4.5 billion, marking a 10% decline from July 2025.
Console hardware sales faced the steepest downturn, dropping 29% to $282 million. This represented the worst July performance for console hardware since 2020. Nintendo Switch 2 unit sales fell 51% compared to the prior year, while Xbox Series declined 18% and PlayStation 5 dropped 6%.
Piscatella attributed the decline to two primary factors. The Nintendo Switch 2, released the previous year to strong initial sales, saw demand taper as hype subsided. Additionally, ongoing memory market constraints have pushed console prices higher, discouraging some consumers from purchasing.
Video game software sales also contracted, declining 9% to $4.07 billion. The decline affected mobile gaming particularly, though console and PC game sales weakened as well. Gaming accessories revenue totaled $187 million, down 6% from the prior year.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II emerged as the month's top-grossing paid game following its July release as a port for PlayStation 4 and 5. The original Call of Duty: Black Ops, similarly ported, claimed fifth place on the top ten list.
