How to unlock Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40-series graphics cards

Nvidia restricted its latest Multi Frame Generation feature to RTX 50-series cards, but users can enable up to 4x frame generation on older RTX 40-series GPUs with unofficial mods and the ReShade HDR Installer.

Multi Frame Generation (MFG) is an AI-powered frame rate boosting feature that creates up to five frames for every frame actually rendered by the GPU. Nvidia introduced the original 2x Frame Generation with RTX 40-series cards in 2022, but restricted the newer Multi Frame Generation technology to RTX 50-series cards only.

The restriction exists for technical reasons. RTX 50-series cards feature a dedicated AI Management Processor (AMP) that works with Flip Metering to deliver rendered and generated frames to the display smoothly. Older RTX 40-series architectures lack these dedicated frame generation features. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated that bringing the latest AI technology to previous-generation GPUs would require significant engineering work.

However, users willing to use unofficial mods can enable up to 4x MFG on RTX 40-series cards. The process involves downloading the ReShade HDR Installer (RHI) from GitHub, installing the "RTX 40 MFG" and "OptiScaler" mods for a supported game, then configuring Nvidia Profile Overrides to enable Dynamic MFG at up to 4x frame count.

Before attempting this method, users should understand its limitations. This approach is not officially supported by Nvidia. Additionally, MFG is not a perfected technology. Enabling higher levels of frame generation can introduce smeary frames and increased latency, even with a frame rate limiter active. The extra frames may not deliver the smoothest experience depending on the game, despite higher frame rates.

Users should test with single-player games first, as the unofficial mods can trigger in-game anti-cheat detection systems. Nvidia maintains a list of games that officially support DLSS Multi Frame Generation. If initial configuration doesn't work, swapping between different driver versions within RHI may be necessary. The FrameView app overlay can confirm whether 4x MFG is active on compatible hardware.
