Ubisoft's Motherbrain Gen-AI Becomes Global Entity Across Studios
Ubisoft has elevated its internal generative AI system Motherbrain to a global entity tasked with accelerating gameplay innovation across all titles, according to internal announcements and developer accounts.

Ubisoft has formally designated its generative AI initiative Motherbrain as a global entity that will operate across the company's studios, according to an internal announcement obtained by Insider Gaming. The move follows the appearance of Motherbrain trademarks last week and signals a significant expansion of generative AI within Ubisoft's development pipeline.
The internal announcement states that Motherbrain will "now operate as a global entity dedicated to supporting gameplay innovation across the group. The team [Motherbrain] will continue to develop proprietary AI technology and middleware dedicated to generative gameplay, which will serve as a shared foundation across our studios." Sources indicate the system is now viewed internally as just as important as Ubisoft's Creative Houses and Core Services.
Xavier Manzanares, a 23-year Ubisoft veteran who previously led production on the Mario + Rabbids series and a canceled Zelda project, will head Motherbrain. In recent years Manzanares served as Research and Development Director for Ubisoft's Gen-AI initiatives, including the Teammates and Neo NPC projects.
Developers across Ubisoft report that generative AI has become increasingly common at all stages of game development. The company's most recent internal Game Developer Conference was described as flooded with AI presentations, to the point that a session without an AI focus felt refreshing.
The reorganization arrives during what Ubisoft has called its "third and final round" of cost-cutting measures, targeting an additional 180 million euros in savings. In September the company announced that Massive Entertainment would take leadership of the Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, and The Division franchises. Industry observers note that Capcom has also publicly discussed its own generative AI plans, reflecting a broader trend among major publishers.
While Ubisoft positions Motherbrain as a tool to accelerate gameplay innovation, the widespread adoption of generative AI across development stages raises questions about creative direction and workforce impact. The company has not disclosed specific titles that will first integrate Motherbrain technology.
