The Tower of Zeldaga Blends Zelda and Druaga in Free Browser Mash-Up

A new free browser game from creator Osmose remixes the NES-era Legend of Zelda with Namco's The Tower of Druaga, casting players as rescuers of Prince Ganondorf from the evil Queen Zeldaga.

The Tower of Zeldaga is a free retro mash-up now playable in your browser. Created by Osmose, a game and chiptune creator, the game combines two influential pieces of gaming history: the original Legend of Zelda and Namco's 60-floor maze RPG The Tower of Druaga.

The premise flips expectations. Instead of the usual Zelda setup, Prince Ganondorf has been abducted by the evil Queen Zeldaga. Your task is to quest through dungeons, collect keys, and work toward his rescue. The developer promises that each room hides secrets, some of them pitch black mazes where you must figure out both enemy locations and the room layout by feel.

Difficulty scales across the game's puzzles. The developer notes on Bluesky that the hardest puzzle requires unconventional thinking, writing: "[T]he hardest puzzle in the game is something I'm both really proud of and afraid that no one will ever solve without help or datamining." The developer drew inspiration from La Mulana developers, choosing to ship the challenge despite concerns about its difficulty. Osmose has also anticipated players attempting to use browser developer tools to cheat, building countermeasures into the game.

The Tower of Druaga itself was a huge influence on the original Zelda games, making this mash-up a blend of interconnected gaming history filtered through NES-era aesthetics. The game is free to play now.
