Shigeru Miyamoto Reveals Why The Legend of Zelda Movie Has No Subtitle

During a Nintendo Direct presentation dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the franchise, Nintendo and Columbia Pictures showcased new details regarding the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto appeared during the broadcast to reveal that the film's official title will be simply The Legend of Zelda. Miyamoto addressed the absence of a subtitle, noting that once audiences finally see the film, the simplicity of the title will completely make sense.

Addressing the narrative structure, Miyamoto and reports from the event confirmed that the movie will feature an entirely original story rather than adapting any single game from the franchise's history. Instead, the upcoming film will draw on all elements, worldbuilding, stories, ideas, and concepts used in games across the past 40 years of the series. Miyamoto also teased the role that the Triforce might play in the plot, leaving fans with plenty of details to speculate about ahead of its launch.

The live-action adaptation is directed by Wes Ball, who is known for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Ball has previously mentioned aiming to bring a sense of realism to the fantasy adventure alongside Studio Ghibli-inspired aesthetics. The cast features Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. Additional cast members include Uli Latukefu as the antagonist Ganondorf and Dichen Lachman as Impa, the advisor to Princess Zelda.

Production on the film has officially wrapped after shooting in New Zealand. The movie is scheduled to receive an exclusive theatrical run premiering on April 30, 2027, before eventually moving to Netflix for its streaming release at an as-yet-undisclosed time. Additional news, including further trailers and promotional materials, is expected to be released at a later date as the premiere window approaches.
