Nintendo Eyes Live-Action Zelda Movie as Gateway to Broaden Franchise Audience
Nintendo of America's President Devon Pritchard calls the upcoming live-action Zelda film, arriving in April 2027, one of the company's most exciting initiatives to reach players beyond gaming.

Nintendo is banking on a live-action film adaptation to expand The Legend of Zelda beyond its core gaming audience. According to Nintendo of America's President and COO Devon Pritchard, the upcoming movie, titled "The Legend of Zelda" and set to release in April 2027, represents a major opportunity for the franchise.
Speaking to Variety, Pritchard emphasized the strategic importance of the Sony Pictures partnership. "We're working with Sony Pictures. We are going to have a movie come out in the end of April," she said. "Those partnerships and touchpoints with companies like Sony and Sony Pictures around how we can bring those experiences more broadly to not only our current players and fans but to new ones, I think that's one of the most exciting things for us over the next few years."
Nintendo shared the film's official title during its 40th anniversary broadcast last week. While a trailer has not yet been released, the company has distributed official photos showcasing the movie's lead characters. The live-action adaptation joins a broader celebration of the Zelda franchise, which includes a remake of Ocarina of Time for Switch 2, 40th anniversary hardware, a concert series, and extensive merchandise tied to the milestone.
Pritchard expressed particular enthusiasm for the Ocarina of Time remake, signaling Nintendo's multi-pronged strategy to reinvigorate interest in one of gaming's most beloved franchises across both new and longtime audiences.
