Creative Assembly Confirms No Sequels for Total War: Warhammer 40,000, Focusing on a Massive Sandbox Instead
Creative Assembly has announced it has no plans to release sequels for Total War: Warhammer 40,000, choosing instead to continually update its initial release as an expansive sandbox experience.
Developer Creative Assembly has confirmed that it does not plan to release any sequels for the upcoming strategy game, Total War: Warhammer 40,000. Speaking at Gamescom 2026, battle product owner Dave Petry explained that the team will instead focus on treating the initial release as a bedrock to continuously update and expand.
Unlike the studio's previous fantasy-setting Total War: Warhammer trilogy—each featuring distinct bespoke campaigns that ultimately merged into the massive Immortal Empires mode—the sci-fi adaptation is designed from the ground up to avoid splitting players up. According to Petry, "The true experience is the sandbox. That's what we want to build, and that's what we want to continue building on, and bringing that into one place so that there are so many different ways that players could enter and still get to experience the whole thing without being siphoned off." Petry added that the vast scope of the galaxy makes a single, continuously supported platform the right approach for the project.
Ahead of its scheduled release in 2027, Creative Assembly has detailed initial plans for the title's faction roster. The game will launch with four customizable factions: Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Aeldari, and Orks. Developers have also outlined post-launch intentions to introduce additional Space Marine chapters, such as the Space Wolves, alongside potential additions like Genestealer Cults and Chaos Space Marines.
Hands-on previews from Gamescom 2026 highlighted several mechanical shifts for the franchise, including map destruction, tactical positioning with bolters and psykers, and cooldown-based bombing runs. Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
