Tim Cain Reveals Steve Jackson Games Objected to Vault Boy in Original Fallout
The Fallout co-creator explains how tabletop publisher Steve Jackson Games took issue with the iconic mascot during licensing negotiations that ultimately fell apart.

Tim Cain has shared new details about Steve Jackson Games' objections to the original Fallout, revealing that the cartoon mascot Vault Boy was among the things the tabletop publisher wanted removed from the game.
"Among other things that Steve Jackson Games didn't like about Fallout was Vault Boy. They specifically singled out Vault Boy as needing to be removed," Cain said in a recent video on Fallout's history. "They didn't like it. We explained the Monopoly reference, they didn't like it. They thought it tonally didn't fit."
Fallout was originally designed using GURPS (Generic Universal Role-Play System), a tabletop ruleset published by Steve Jackson Games. The licensing deal between developer Interplay and the publisher eventually collapsed, though the exact reasons have remained unclear for decades.
Jackson's objections went beyond just the mascot. According to PC Gamer's 1988 reporting, he also disliked the violent opening cinematic, wanted larger character models with more detailed weapons, and objected to the small cartoon characters representing the game's skills. Cain confirmed Jackson took issue with these elements in the cutscene as well.
Rather than compromise on Interplay's creative vision, the studio dropped the GURPS license entirely. Cain notes that keeping Vault Boy and the consistent cartoon iconography proved valuable for the game's design, making skills and perks readable even at small icon sizes.
Steve Jackson previously stated he didn't realize there was a problem until a member of the press contacted him about the deal ending, suggesting the communication breakdown between the two sides was significant.
