Thief 2 Remastered Should Be Thief 2 Gold, PC Gamer Says

As Nightdive prepares to remaster the classic stealth series, one writer hopes the studio will revive the planned GOTY expansion that never shipped with the original Thief 2: The Metal Age.

Nightdive Studios' Thief remaster is shaping up to be a thoughtful remake of the classic stealth game, complete with a new campaign called The Tarnished Mirror. But PC Gamer is already thinking ahead to what comes next.

When Nightdive tackles Thief 2: The Metal Age, the publication argues the studio should consider releasing it as "Thief 2 Gold." That name references plans from original developer Looking Glass Studios for a GOTY edition of Thief 2 that would have included five additional missions never released to the public.

Nightdive has a track record of accessing archived materials and working with original developers to realize abandoned concepts. PC Gamer suggests the studio could give those planned missions proper treatment, potentially surpassing fan-created content that has sustained the Thief community over the years.

The pitch is partly practical and partly tongue-in-cheek marketing ambition. Calling the remaster "Thief 2 Gold" would acknowledge the expanded scope while honoring what Looking Glass Studios originally envisioned. Nightdive has not announced plans for a Thief 2 remaster or confirmed it will pursue the Gold edition concept, but the studio's approach to the first game's remake suggests it takes such archival work seriously.
