The Last of Us Season 3 Will Not Feature Creative Input From Naughty Dog
Writer-director Neil Druckmann confirmed that neither he nor Naughty Dog will have a creative role in shaping Season 3 of HBO's television adaptation.
Writer-director Neil Druckmann stepped back from direct involvement in HBO's television adaptation of The Last of Us to focus on Naughty Dog's ongoing gaming projects, which include Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann confirmed that Season 3 will wrap up the series. Unlike the first two seasons, Naughty Dog "did not have a creative role in the direction" of the third season.
Druckmann stated that he was not involved in shaping the creative direction for Season 3 and therefore could not personally speak to how its production is progressing. By contrast, Druckmann was heavily involved in Seasons 1 and 2, having co-written several episodes and directed two. While HBO management previously indicated that the show would likely conclude around this point, Druckmann emphasized that Naughty Dog remains the steward of the intellectual property and that the franchise will continue.
Teasing future developments, Druckmann noted that the studio is not finished with the franchise and has multiple projects in the works that will be discussed when the time is right. This follows earlier remarks from Druckmann suggesting there are more stops ahead for the series, alongside persistent teases regarding a potential third game. Meanwhile, Naughty Dog continues development on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet alongside other unannounced titles, following the prior cancellation of The Last of Us Online.
