The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Preview Details Gameplay, Combat, and Spring 2027 Launch Window

Developer Owlcat Games is bringing the grounded science fiction universe of television and literature to PlayStation 5 with the upcoming role-playing game The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. Recent hands-on sessions during Gamescom on PC gave players a closer look at how the universe is translated into interactive media, featuring immersive locations like an enemy base on Ganymede Station.

The story follows a pair of twin protagonists tracking down a suspicious package across semi-open environments including cargo bays, worker areas, and laboratories. During exploration, players can interact with non-player characters and utilize character stats like charisma, though the game intentionally avoids displaying numbered skill requirements to make dialogue choices feel like a roll of the dice. Exploration eventually shifts into linear narrative sequences, highlighting a harrowing encounter with a Protomolecule creature.

Combat operates as a third-person tactical shooter where players command squad members to single out targets or detonate environmental hazards. Rather than managing repetitive weapon drops with minor specification changes, the arsenal system upgrades weapons and gadgets automatically through continued use. Normal and hard difficulties demand careful squad management and positioning, though testers noted that elements such as the cover system require further polish before the title reaches consumers.

The title is currently scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5. As development continues, fans of the established universe can look forward to exploring additional locations such as Mars, Ceres, and Tycho Station.
