The Blood of Dawnwalker Review: A Story-Driven Vampire RPG with Mixed Mechanics
Critics review The Blood of Dawnwalker, a dark vampire action RPG from developer Rebel Wolves, praising its strong narrative and characters while noting mixed combat and open-world issues.
Developer Rebel Wolves' dark vampire action role-playing game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, launched with a release date of September 3, 2026, priced at $70 / £60. The story follows Coen, a peasant from Laslea in the Vale Sangora region of 1300s Romania, who becomes a Dawnwalker—human by day and a vampire by night—after his family and village are attacked by the ancient vrakhir (vampire) overlord Brencis and his forces. Coen is given 30 days and 30 nights before Brencis' coronation to save his family and villagers.
Reviewers have highlighted the game's strong narrative, character writing, and voice acting as standout elements. The title features a time-management system where actions spend in-game time units, though critics noted that the pressure is largely illusory since players generally have more than enough time to complete objectives and feel overpowered by the later stages. Coen's journey touches upon complex family histories and his internal struggle with his new vampiric powers, supported by multi-faceted characters such as Volk, Vicho, Lacra, Anca, and Crake.
On the mechanical side, reception to combat and exploration has been mixed. Coen utilizes a directional swordplay system paired with vampire abilities and witchcraft depending on the time of day, alongside skill trees. While some praised the precision-oriented combat and approachable directional blocking, others criticized a severe lack of enemy variety and repetitive encounter loops. Additionally, the open world has been described as lovely to look at but annoyingly empty between locations, leaving reviewers with a nuanced view of an emotionally charged vampire fiction title.
