The Alters Developers Discuss Last Variable Expansion Reception and Design Choices

Senior writer Katarzyna Tybinka and game design coordinator Marcin Łazowski discuss the critical reception, narrative focus, and mechanics of Last Variable in a recent post-launch interview.

Following the release of the Last Variable expansion for The Alters, senior writer Katarzyna Tybinka and game design coordinator Marcin Łazowski sat down for a post-launch interview to discuss the project's critical reception, narrative themes, and development challenges. While reviews have praised the expansion's new management systems, the overall critical reception has been more divided compared to the base game.

Addressing the division in critical response, Łazowski explained that the development team modified their approach for the DLC. Whereas the base game emphasized a story-driven experience, the expansion chose to focus heavily on players who enjoyed base building, economy, and planet exploration. Some critics noted that focusing exclusively on different versions of Jan Scientist resulted in a cast lacking the emotional and professional variety of the original characters. In response, Łazowski highlighted the addition of a double skill system to introduce more gameplay combinations, while Tybinka noted that the Scientist purposefully created versions close to his original self to assemble like-minded allies, leading to unique interpersonal dynamics driven by a shared ego and superiority complex.

The developers also touched upon specific gameplay mechanics introduced in the expansion, including Cryosleep and terraforming. The Cryosleep mechanic was designed to give players control over pacing, replacing the strict time limit of the base game. According to Łazowski, players still tend to feel pressure and attempt to optimize each day during the early and mid-game cycles. Meanwhile, terraforming emerged as a widely praised addition, with the pipe connection system undergoing significant iteration during development following playtesting to reduce unnecessary backtracking and simplify user experience.
