Tetris CEO Explains Why Fortnite Crossover Had to Remain Non-Violent

According to The Tetris Company CEO Maya Rogers, Tetris blocks in Fortnite Chapter 7, Season 4 had to be non-violent and helpful to align with company values.

When Epic Games brought iconic puzzle pieces into the chaotic world of Fortnite, the collaboration came with strict guidelines. According to Maya Rogers, CEO of The Tetris Company, the crossover had to stay entirely true to the core values that Tetris represents. Rogers explained in an interview with GamesBeat that the partnership grew out of initial conversations with Epic Games regarding an ode to legendary video games.

Because Tetris aims to be a game for everyone that remains inclusive and non-violent, Rogers and her team wanted to ensure the integration would not damage the brand's reputation. Initially, the falling Tetriminos were planned to deal damage. However, The Tetris Company insisted that the blocks should only perform helpful actions. As a result, the pieces appearing in the Sunken Shores location during Chapter 7, Season 4 (“Override”) serve entirely defensive and restorative functions. When players use the Tetris Rift to summon giant blocks from the sky, clearing lines heals the player and the structures act as protective shields.

Rogers noted that the collaboration also features special Tetris-themed easter eggs in Sunken Shores that allow players to transform into a Tetrimino or turn others into blocks. Fans have responded enthusiastically to the crossover, and Rogers teased that players should stay tuned for more developments in the future.
