System Shock 2 Remaster Free on Epic Games Store Until October 8

System Shock 2's Nightdive remaster is free on the Epic Games Store until October 8. The giveaway arrives barely a year after the remaster's release.

The original System Shock 2 is a space-based survival horror immersive sim that traps players aboard a spaceship overtaken by a fleshy hivemind. It preceded Deus Ex by one year and remains a classic of the genre. Players choose between three classes: gun guy, tech guy, or psychic guy. The variety of approaches to overcoming challenges gives the game considerable replay value.

Nightdive's 2025 remaster modernizes the experience significantly. The game runs smoothly, features improved visuals, and supports gamepad controls for players who prefer controllers over keyboard and mouse. According to PC Gamer, the remaster is "an absolute delight" and plays well despite the game's age. The original remained fun before Nightdive's restoration work, and the technical improvements make it more accessible to contemporary players.

Claiming the game requires logging into an Epic Games account and will likely involve two-factor authentication, but PC Gamer's reviewer considers the effort worthwhile given the quality and the free price.
