A new report from tracking firm Circana reveals that rising costs are increasingly driving video game subscription cancellations in the United States. According to data shared by Circana senior director and video game analyst Mat Piscatella, more than 40 percent of consumers who recently cancelled memberships for Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online cited cost as their primary reason.

Writing on BlueSky, Piscatella explained that cost has become a much stronger driver of US cancellations compared to the first quarter of the year. He clarified that this data does not mean the total number of people cancelling subscriptions has increased. Instead, it indicates that those who do cancel are now far more likely to point to pricing rather than other factors, such as a weak selection of games.

The survey details how budget pressures affect each platform. Among those who cancelled their Nintendo Switch Online membership over the last few months, 50 percent selected the option stating they "couldn't justify the cost of the subscription within my budget but liked the service." This figure rose from 40 percent earlier in the year. For both Xbox Game Pass Essential and PlayStation Plus Essential, 40 percent of cancelling users selected the same response, up from 37 percent in the first quarter.

These shifts follow widespread price increases across the industry. Sony raised PlayStation Plus prices earlier this year, and Microsoft adjusted Xbox Game Pass subscription options. Additionally, all three major console manufacturers have introduced hardware price bumps this year, driven by rising component costs and changing market conditions. As gaming overall becomes more expensive, subscription services are feeling the pressure of tightening consumer budgets.
