StudioCanal Launches New Label Just Days Before Content Leaves PlayStation Libraries

Just days before over 500 movies are set to be pulled from PlayStation libraries across several territories, StudioCanal has launched a brand-new catalog label named StudioCanal Classics. According to a press release, the extensive catalog comprises over 18,000 titles and will encompass both theatrical re-releases and home entertainment offerings designed to present classic films "as they were meant to be seen."

The initiative's rollout begins with worldwide theatrical re-releases for major features including Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Manhunter: The Final Cut, and Pan's Labyrinth. Meanwhile, upcoming home entertainment releases featured under the label include Chaplin, Inside Llewyn Davis, and a complete David Lynch collection.

This launch coincides with an impending content removal on PlayStation platforms. Back in June, PlayStation users in specific territories received notifications stating that StudioCanal content would be removed from their digital libraries effective September 1 due to an expiring licensing agreement. PlayStation subsequently published a full list of affected media, which features titles like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Paddington, and Pan's Labyrinth. While many of these films will find new life through StudioCanal's latest restoration efforts, previously purchased digital copies on PlayStation will no longer be available to users, highlighting ongoing discussions surrounding digital ownership models.
