Stronghold 4 returns after 15 years with elaborate castles and eccentric enemy lords
The medieval siege strategy series is back with seven-CPU skirmishes, 14 battlefields, and eight distinct antagonists ranging from budget-cutting bureaucrats to goth villains.

Stronghold 4 is launching later this year, marking the first numbered entry in the castle-building strategy series since Stronghold 3 in 2011. Developer Firefly is emphasizing both scale and variety in the sequel, with features designed to appeal to players who enjoy both fortress design and tactical combat.
The game supports seven-CPU skirmishes and 14 battlefields, giving players substantial options for multiplayer and single-player scenarios. Castle design appears central to the experience, with strongholds ranging from simple layouts to intricate defensive networks and built from materials including wood and stone.
Stronghold 4 introduces eight distinct enemy lords as primary antagonists. The cast includes a fiscally conservative elderly figure reminiscent of classic city-building game tropes, a character described as having a notably unpleasant appearance, a mentally unstable opponent, and a goth-styled villain who promises to destroy the player methodically. This variety in enemy personality should differentiate encounters across campaigns.
The series has historically positioned players as both defenders building and maintaining castles and attackers attempting to breach enemy fortifications. Stronghold 4 appears to continue this dual focus while incorporating what Firefly describes as refinements to core gameplay. The developer showcased the game at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct.
