SteamDB Acquired by Nexus Mods Owners Due to Co-Founder Burnout

The community-run backend database SteamDB has been acquired by Chosen, the company that owns Nexus Mods. The decision to step back comes after 13 years of holding the project's keys, with the founders citing burnout and an increasing self-inflicted workload as primary reasons for the sale. SteamDB co-founder xPaw explained in a public post that what began as a hobby project eventually demanded the time of a full-time job. Coupled with industry changes following the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of artificial intelligence, the co-founder noted a decline in personal passion and an unsustainable mental load caused by trying to keep pace with Steam's continuous growth in games, players, and new features.

Rather than leaving the platform to fade or shutting it down entirely, the founders sought a worthy partner to take over operations. They ultimately selected Nexus Mods' parent company, Chosen, noting similarities between the two platforms. Victor Folmann, CEO of Chosen, assured users in a post that SteamDB will retain its own name, brand, community, and identity, emphasizing that the site will not be immediately folded into Nexus Mods. Co-founder xPaw will continue collaborating with the team over the coming months to facilitate a smooth transition.

Behind the scenes, the acquisition aims to address long-standing vulnerabilities of a project that has historically operated largely as a one-person band. Chosen plans to provide a properly funded team, better infrastructure, enhanced security, and improved scalability. These changes are expected to support long-standing improvements, browser extension development, and game coverage expansion. Additionally, while the site has historically relied on donated Steam keys to track game files and depots, Chosen will begin directly funding keys for games that do not make their way to the platform through donations alone.

Looking ahead, Folmann did not rule out exploring deeper connections between SteamDB and Nexus Mods over time. Potential integration concepts include helping users discover game modding communities directly from SteamDB, importing useful data into Nexus Mods, or leveraging SteamDB version data behind the scenes to simplify mod installation and maintenance. Regarding monetization, Folmann noted in an accompanying FAQ that while SteamDB will remain free to access, Chosen will explore lighter-touch revenue models rather than traditional website advertisements, such as partnerships, integrations, and affiliate links with publishers.

Chosen previously took over ownership of Nexus Mods in June of the previous year, when founder Robin 'Dark0ne' Scott stepped aside in a similar transition of leadership.
