Punks are taking over Steam starting October 9 with the Punk Games Showcase, a week-long curated digital festival celebrating games made with and expressing a punk spirit. The showcase runs through October 16 alongside the latest Hardcore Punk Jam on itch.io.

Brad Smith of studio Milky Tea organized the Steam showcase and received 443 game submissions. The final selection includes over 100 games, with Smith applying intentional curation to highlight authentic punk expression across multiple dimensions.

"I basically had to create arbitrary categories to help lock in a decision," Smith explained. "Does this game have punk music, or is it about punk culture? Does this game align with the general vibes of this showcase in its aesthetics, tone, or intent? Does this game/developer have design intentions that feel genuine?" He noted that application statements often proved decisive, with developer backgrounds in punk music and bands carrying particular weight. Self-published games received special consideration, which Smith compared to punk musicians folding their own album sleeves or starting independent labels like Dischord Records.

The showcase explicitly filtered for generative AI usage. Smith consulted with illustrator Camille Carpentier from the Belgian scene to identify and remove AI-generated art from submissions. "We did our best to curate and filter that stuff out in our spare time but there was a lot," Smith said. The curation also excluded games from studios with questionable employee treatment or shady business practices, and rejected numerous submissions misunderstanding the showcase's focus, submitting cyberpunk or steampunk games instead.

Featured titles span diverse gameplay. Too Many Fucking Nazis is a fast-paced first-person shooter about creatively destroying Nazis with the option to flip them off beforehand. Punk Juice involves joining a band, thrifting, playing dead-end gigs, and getting frustrated with code-locked bathrooms. Wax Heads places players in a struggling record store, slacking off with coworkers while tending customers and listening to music. Club Soko turns a mosh pit into a puzzle, navigating around security, crowd-killers, and pit-edge observers. Tonight We Riot is a 2D crowd-based brawler where players control protestors resisting tyranny, developed by a worker-owned indie team. 10 Second Mixtape is a music game where players create songs for others to remix and perform globally. Tetherpunk has players kitbash spaceships from corporate scrap parts, then use them to destroy what the overlords built.

Smith expressed a soft spot for CRUST SHMUP, a free game he described as "the game equivalent of Napalm Death's 1987 record Scum." Its crusty style influenced his graphics work for the event Steam page. He highlighted Beat, Heart, Beat as releasing soon with grungy Midwest emo vibes, and flagged 4MECHEROS, Urine Nation, CHILDREN OF SATURN, and Creatures Like Us as games worth watching. He noted that VILE: Exhumed, created by Cara Cadaver and entered in the Hardcore Punk Jam in 2022, deserves inclusion, as does the older favorite Teenage Blob.

Smith hopes the showcase will convince Valve to add a "punk" categorization label on Steam, allowing developers to tag games accordingly and helping players discover them more easily. "I can see why some people think labels are a bit silly, as I do feel like the term 'indie' has lost a lot of its original meaning these days," he said. "But I figured it makes sense to have an intention behind organizing all of this and to try to help represent these kinds of games differently to the wider industry." The tag already exists on itch.io. Smith plans to continue running Hardcore Punk Game Jams with guaranteed showcase spots for future entries until Steam adds the label.
