Steam Frame Teardown Reveals Valve's Commitment to Repairability

PC Gamer's attempted disassembly and iFixit's full teardown show the Steam Frame is built with user serviceability in mind, though some components require careful handling.

Valve's Steam Frame VR headset demonstrates strong repairability design, according to a teardown analysis by iFixit that followed PC Gamer's unsuccessful attempt to fully disassemble a review unit.

PC Gamer's teardown attempt revealed the challenges of working with the compact headset. The core module, which houses the system-on-chip, optics, RAM, memory, and sensors, is accessible behind a magnetic face mask secured by three switches. Once removed, six Torx screws expose most of the internal structure. However, PC Gamer decided to stop short of complete disassembly to avoid damaging the review unit before publication.

iFixit's Shahram Mokhtari completed the full teardown, documenting steps PC Gamer avoided. The magnetic optics stack proved relatively easy to remove, though push-fit connectors on the back are glued in place. Removing the metal bar supporting the lens stack and the proximity sensor exposes the metal plate with a copper heatpipe atop the mainboard. Three screws on the heatpipe proved to be the final constraint holding the plate in place, a detail that initially confused iFixit's expert as well.

The mainboard contains a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor paired with 16 GB of SK hynix LPDDR5X RAM and 256 GB of SK hynix storage. The reverse side of the board features a fan, a larger heatpipe, and six IR emitters arranged three on each side. iFixit noted the IR emitter placement across both the headset and controllers likely explains the Steam Frame's accurate tracking performance during testing.

Mokhtari stated: "In context, there are very few repairs that would need this level of disassembly, so I've got to hand it to Valve, they layered the critical components really well with an eye towards user serviceability." He flagged that the fan should be easier to access, as it is an active component prone to failure or degradation over time.

The battery is among the most user-replaceable components. Only a handful of screws, a press connector, and adhesive separate users from the battery pack. iFixit expects third-party battery replacements to be feasible, particularly with Valve's ongoing development of an alternative strap featuring interchangeable batteries.

The teardown adds to Valve's track record of prioritizing repairability across its product line. The Steam Controller, Steam Deck, and Steam Machine all received positive repairability assessments in previous teardowns. Achieving user serviceability in a compact, standalone VR headset presents greater engineering constraints than previous Valve hardware.
