Steam Frame Reportedly Coming with a Copy of ‘Half-Life: Alyx’ for Free

Valve's upcoming standalone virtual reality headset, known as Steam Frame, may include a free copy of the acclaimed 2020 VR game Half-Life: Alyx. While Valve has not yet officially announced the price or release date for the headset, backend store page strings spotted by VR analyst and Valve watcher Brad Lynch suggest a special promotional bundle is in the works.

According to the uncovered strings—which feature terms such as AccountHardwarePromotions, HLAlyxPromoButtons, and Frame Alyx Promo—purchasers of the Steam Frame could receive the $60 game at no additional cost. This approach would echo Valve's past strategy with the Valve Index PC VR headset, which historically bundled a free copy of Half-Life: Alyx with hardware purchases.

Released six years ago, Half-Life: Alyx remains widely regarded as a benchmark for high-end virtual reality gaming. However, running the compute-intensive title natively on modern mobile chipsets presents a challenge. Although Valve has certified over 100 PC VR and flatscreen titles—including Portal 2—to run in standalone mode on day one, Half-Life: Alyx is not currently on that certified list. Even so, statements from Valve to media outlets late last year noted that the company has been experimenting and hoping to get the game running smoothly in standalone mode.

Valve previously stated late last year that it was not developing new first-party content specifically for the Steam Frame. Observers note that potential hardware costs influenced by ongoing storage, RAM, and system-on-chip market pressures could make a software incentive an effective way to offset the hardware investment. Consumers still await official confirmation from Valve regarding the final release date, pricing, and the full details of any prospective promotional bundle for the Steam Frame.
