Steam Frame charging patch cuts recharge times in half when powered off

Valve has released SteamOS version 0.3.0 for Steam Frame, addressing a counterintuitive charging behavior that was causing significantly slower battery refill times. The update substantially increases charging speed when the headset is off or sleeping.

Valve has pushed out SteamOS version 0.3.0 for Steam Frame, delivering a fix to one of the VR headset's most frustrating quirks: charging was dramatically slower when the device was powered off, the exact opposite of what most users would expect.

During testing, reviewers discovered that leaving Steam Frame switched off during charging actually doubled the charge time. With the headset off, the power meter read just 11 W from the official 45 W power adapter. Turning on the device during charging revealed the real issue: the hardware supported substantially faster charging while active, but something was throttling it during sleep or shutdown.

Valve clarified the original charging behavior in a statement: "An empty battery takes around two hours to charge to full capacity. However, the charging is not linear. There is fast charging from 0 to 65%, and regular charging from 65% and up. Charging to 65% is expected to take less than 40 minutes." The company noted that these timings are subject to change and optimization over time.

The patch notes for version 0.3.0 indicate the fix as "substantially faster charging while unit is off / sleeping." In testing after the update, power draw with the headset off increased to 27 W, a significant improvement. Users can now let Steam Frame discharge fully without doubling their charging time.

Beyond the charging fix, the update addresses several other issues. Valve improved controller tracking while haptics are active, fixed a "garbled audio" microphone bug, and corrected a Motion Smoothing setting that was being ignored per-app. Performance improvements include enhanced system stability under high load, better motion smoothing in Half-Life Alyx, and multiple graphics and OS optimizations.

On the developer side, Valve has relaxed Proton playability criteria to allow any resolution instead of requiring 1440p, and improved Vulkan layer compatibility for broader game support. The company continues to expand Steam Frame's certified game library through Proton and FEX layers as units reach customers.
