Steam's Discounts and Events Section Gets Algorithmic Overhaul

Valve is replacing Steam's hand-curated discounts and events section with personalized recommendations, showing 10x more games daily but raising questions about which developers will benefit.

Valve is overhauling Steam's Discounts and Events section, moving away from hand-curated selections toward personalized algorithmic recommendations. The change aims to surface more relevant deals for individual customers rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

According to Valve's announcement, the shift showed significant results during testing. The company stated: "By featuring games in a more personalized way in the Discounts & Events section, we were able to show 10x more games to customers in a given day in that section. As a result, we saw meaningful increases in store page visits, wishlists, and cart additions."

Valve framed the change as beneficial for both players and developers. The company explained that "the constraint of a manually managed calendar doesn't make as much sense with such diverse customer tastes and so many relevant deals for customers available at any given time."

However, the shift raises questions about algorithmic fairness. The change could potentially benefit established titles with existing visibility while smaller, lesser-known games may struggle to gain exposure depending on how the algorithm prioritizes recommendations.

Valve has not announced a definite implementation date. The company stated: "We don't have a definite date for implementing these changes and are still tuning the details, but we wanted to set expectations. We don't believe this will be perfect right away, but we are confident the new system will result in better outcomes for customers and developers."
