Star Wars Zero Company Evolved the XCOM Formula With Character-Driven Permadeath

Developed by Bit Reactor, Star Wars Zero Company brings tactical turn-based strategy and deep character bonds to the Clone Wars era.

Developed by Bit Reactor, a studio founded by veterans of Firaxis and the modern XCOM games, Star Wars Zero Company has successfully translated tactical turn-based strategy into the Star Wars universe. Following its launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, the title has earned strong critical reception, holding an 85 average on Metacritic and a top-critic average of 88 on OpenCritic.

Set during the final stages of the Clone Wars, the game focuses on Hawks, a customizable former Republic officer leading an unconventional mercenary squad. Players navigate the shadows of the wider conflict, investigating a Separatist-aligned faction known as the Infinite Coil and its leader, Kundri Fathom. Between deployments, players manage their operations from the Den, a hub where they can upgrade facilities, purchase equipment, customize squad loadouts, and select tactical missions from a holotable.

The core gameplay retains the classic foundations of the tactics genre while introducing modern quality-of-life adjustments. Cover, movement ranges, and target lines are clearly communicated. Players can direct Overwatch fields into a manually selected cone rather than covering default circular angles. Additionally, players earn Advantage Points through exploration and battlefield successes, which can be spent to execute powerful tactical abilities.

A primary element of Zero Company is its emphasis on character permanence and relations. The campaign features a Bonds system, where operators who regularly deploy together build synergistic combat benefits, narrative camaraderie, and cross-training rewards. In addition to player-created customizable recruits, players command a central roster of authored characters, including the Jedi Padawan operator Tel-Rae, whose unique backstory and Jedi abilities shape tactical encounters.

To heighten tension, the game incorporates a permadeath system. By default, when an operator's health is depleted, they enter a "Downed" state. If an operator suffers a third consecutive injury, they are permanently lost. Unlike other games where story-critical characters are protected by plot armor, authored characters like Tel-Rae are vulnerable to permadeath after their initial narrative introductions, with the game's dialogue and story adjusting to showcase the loss of fallen squad members. For players seeking alternative experiences, the permadeath mechanic can be toggled off, or players can choose an optional "Iron Man" mode to restrict manual game saves.
