Squadron 42 Delayed to Q2 2027 to Avoid GTA6 Competiton
Cloud Imperium Games has delayed Squadron 42 to the second quarter of 2027 to avoid competing with Grand Theft Auto 6, while Star Citizen achieves a major development milestone.
Cloud Imperium Games boss Chris Roberts shared updates regarding both Star Citizen and its single-player component, Squadron 42. Originally slated for a 2026 release, Squadron 42 has now been moved to the second quarter of 2027. According to Roberts, the decision stems from a desire to avoid direct competition and media overshadowing from Rockstar’s upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6. Although GTA 6 is not launching on PC, Roberts conceded that the immense industry-wide attention on Rockstar's title would make generating coverage and getting the word out about Squadron 42 particularly challenging.
Meanwhile, Star Citizen continues to see growth in player engagement. In the first half of 2026, developers noted a 7% increase in average daily players and an 11% bump in monthly active players compared to the previous year, with concurrent players peaking at 35,890. The project recently reached a massive financial milestone, with its crowdfunding total passing one billion dollars and currently sitting at $1,040,363,496, supported by 6,685,884 registered accounts. The funding tally for 2025 notably broke all records from past years by a wide margin.
On the technical front, the development team successfully deployed what they define as the first use case of dynamic server meshing alongside the release of Alpha 4.10 and Siege of Orison. Termed Quasi Dynamic Server Meshing (QDSM) by the networking team, the system monitors server load when instances are created and dynamically spins up or down additional servers once specified maximum load ratios are hit. While it does not yet subdivide territories in the persistent universe, it serves as a foundational step required for Star Citizen to progress toward version 1.0.
