Spider-Noir Canceled After One Season at Prime Video
Prime Video has canceled Spider-Noir after one season, despite critical acclaim and 11 Emmy nominations, due to streaming numbers failing to meet studio expectations relative to its reported budget.
Prime Video has decided not to renew Spider-Noir for a second season, despite the series earning critical acclaim and a notable 11 Emmy nominations. According to reports from Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television expected higher streaming numbers when evaluating the show's future. Recent reports indicate that the first season's budget was approximately $400 million, a massive financial investment that likely required the series to achieve megahit status to justify further production costs.
Starring Nicolas Cage as a jaded, down-on-his-luck private detective version of Ben Reilly—the Spider—the series followed the character returning to superheroism to face classic Rogues Gallery villains such as Sandman and Silvermane. The show achieved a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is currently streaming in both black-and-white and color on Prime Video.
Despite the cancellation of Spider-Noir, Amazon and Sony are continuing their multi-title partnership utilizing intellectual property from Sony's Universe of Marvel characters. This marks the second high-profile cancellation from the collaboration, following the earlier axing of the Silk: Spider-Society spin-off before it entered production. However, development continues on other projects, with reports indicating that a third project is nearing a series order, though specific details remain under wraps.
