Sound Designer Yuri Ha Reimagines Gun Foley for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

Sound designer Yuri Ha has created a series of imaginative and unique gun foley redesigns for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, moving away from typical military soundscapes to experiment with anime, alien, and magic concepts.

Sound design plays a crucial role in shaping how players perceive action on screen, and sound designer Yuri Ha has recently applied her talents to reimagine the gun foley for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Rather than sticking strictly to conventional military audio design, Ha experimented with several unique concepts to give weapons from specific bundles distinct acoustic identities.

Focusing on select weapon bundles—including Nihilist, Seaborne, and Ferrofluid—the project introduced unconventional audio choices. For an octopus-themed character, Ha incorporated cute, anime-style sounds centered on water effects while ensuring that the creature's distinct viscosity and the gun foley could be felt separately. For an alien-inspired concept, she expressed texture using viscous and heavy audio elements, depicting movement by mixing whip sounds with high-frequency creature noises and dynamic panning. Meanwhile, a magic-themed concept was composed around metal and magical elements, integrating anime influences to ensure the tactile impact of combining, separating, and knife actions remained clearly audible.

While such experimental soundscapes might not appeal to every player's tactical preferences, the artistic approach offers a creative and immersive twist on traditional shooter audio. In addition to her work on Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Yuri Ha has previously created sound redesigns for other projects, including a Bunny trailer for The First Descendant and Project Spectrum. These creative explorations highlight how sound design continues to push boundaries across different titles, drawing inspiration from unconventional sources to craft memorable auditory experiences in gaming.
