Sony's recently announced decision to halt sales of physical game discs in 2028 follows years of stark economic trends and declining retail numbers in the United States. While many gamers have lamented the upcoming change, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shared tracking data detailing how physical game sales have dropped significantly over the past two decades.

According to Circana tracking data dating back to 2003, US physical game sales peaked in the 12 months ending in June 2009. During that period, 297 million physical units were sold across the country. Those sales have experienced a steady downward trajectory since then, resulting in just 37 million physical units sold in the US over the most recent 12-month period.

The drop is further illustrated by individual game sales milestones. Piscatella noted that only seven PlayStation games have sold over 100,000 physical units in the US so far in 2026. By comparison, 100 PlayStation games reached that same physical sales milestone in 2008. Furthermore, the top-selling physical PlayStation game has only reached 275,000 units sold domestically this year.

Aggregate spending on physical video games showed a small four percent year-to-date increase compared to the previous year, but this minor uptick follows 16 consecutive years of substantial declines. Physical spending dropped from a peak of $11.5 billion in 2009 to $1.6 billion for the 12 months ending in May. Piscatella attributed the recent slight growth to physical sales on Nintendo platforms, while other platforms such as PlayStation continue to see percentage drops ranging from the teens to the mid-30s.

The transition toward digital platforms began years ago with the rise of Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, and WiiWare, which familiarized console gamers with downloadable titles. Subsequent hardware generations cemented the trend, leading to a point where physical-exclusive console releases are practically nonexistent. Market data indicates that 27 percent of all PS5 hardware and 52 percent of all Xbox Series hardware sold in the US has consisted of digital-only editions, explaining why Sony is moving away from the physical disc market.
