Sony Reportedly Canceled Hideo Kojima's Physint Over Budget and Exclusivity Concerns
A Bloomberg report reveals Sony Interactive Entertainment walked away from publishing Kojima Productions' upcoming stealth action game due to missed deadlines, budget issues, and sales expectations.

Sony Interactive Entertainment shocked the gaming industry when it announced the termination of its publishing agreement for Physint, the highly anticipated upcoming stealth action game from Kojima Productions. While the initial announcement did not outline the exact reasons for the split, a new report from Bloomberg has shed light on the financial and strategic concerns that led to PlayStation's departure from the project.
According to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, Physint had already missed several deadlines and was projected to go significantly over budget, despite the title still being several years away from release. Furthermore, the commercial performance of Hideo Kojima's previous games under the Sony partnership played a major role in the decision. The report claims that both Death Stranding and its upcoming sequel failed to meet PlayStation's internal revenue expectations.
Exclusivity also proved to be a critical sticking point. PlayStation was reportedly hesitant to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into another intellectual property it did not fully own, especially given the timed-exclusivity nature of Kojima's previous titles. Because Sony has reportedly shifted away from releasing its single-player games on PC, it stood to gain little from a PC version of Physint that Kojima Productions could launch independently or through another publisher. This misalignment of platform strategy made the massive investment a risk Sony was ultimately unwilling to take.
According to Hideo Kojima, PlayStation first informed him of its plans to cancel Physint in mid-June of this year. Despite the setback, Kojima Productions quickly pivot-negotiated a new publishing agreement with Microsoft. Xbox will now fund and publish Physint, which is planned for release on Xbox consoles and PC.
Microsoft views Physint as a strong investment opportunity, particularly due to the broader media rights included in the agreement. The new deal grants Xbox the film and television adaptation rights for both Physint and Kojima Productions' other active project, the experimental horror game OD. Expanding Xbox franchises into linear media remains a core strategy for Xbox leadership.
Physint was originally announced during a PlayStation event in 2024 as a spiritual successor to the tactical espionage genre Kojima popularized. While the game's cast includes announced actors Charlee Fraser and Don Lee, no gameplay footage or concrete release window has been made public.
