Sony Disc-Making Plant Decreasing Production by 10 Percent, Not 90

According to a Sony DADC spokesperson, Sony's final disc-making plant will decrease production volume by 10 percent in 2028 rather than the previously reported 90 percent.

Sony is adjusting expectations regarding its physical media production timeline, indicating that its final disc-making plant is decreasing production by 10 percent rather than the widely reported 90 percent. Two months after initial reports suggested that Sony's last disc-making plant in Thalgau was being heavily repurposed, a Sony DADC spokesperson clarified the figures to game journalist Brian Crecente.

According to the spokesperson, the original statement regarding production declines was misinterpreted. "To clarify and avoid any misleading information: in that statement Dietmar anticipated an overall product volume decline by 10 percent, not a decline down to 10 percent," the spokesperson stated. However, Sony DADC did not respond to subsequent fact-check requests concerning whether the division is still proceeding with plans to retrain all 300 employees to manufacture microlenses instead of discs, a detail previously reported by ORF Austria.

Despite this slower decline in production volume, Sony has not altered its broader timeline regarding physical media for new releases. The company maintains its decision to stop producing brand-new games on physical discs by January 2028. Even after that cutoff date takes effect, Sony will reportedly continue allowing publishers to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games.

Broader industry trends continue to cast uncertainty over the concept of video game ownership. Major publishers have been absent from Microsoft's disc-to-digital initiative, and Sony recently argued in a legal context that reasonable consumers should not expect to own purchased digital or physical games. The slower transition timeline at the Thalgau plant means physical discs will remain in circulation longer than initially anticipated following initial reports, though the long-term future of physical game ownership remains restricted as publishers shift focus toward digital distribution models.
