Smiling Friends Creators Reveal Season 4 Scripts Have Been Drafted

Creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack revealed that Smiling Friends season 4 scripts have already been drafted despite the show coming to an end.

Animated comedy series Smiling Friends surprised fans when creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack announced the show would be coming to a close. Adult Swim had commissioned two additional seasons, but Hadel and Cusack felt it was the right time to end the series.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Cusack explained that their creative tank was empty at the time. However, the decision to end the show did not stem from a lack of ideas or creative burnout. Zach Hadel noted that they maintain a Google document filled with concepts, clarifying that continuing without the proper spark would have caused the show to lose its essence.

Remarkably, the creators confirmed that material for the future already exists in draft form. "We had scripts ready for season four, even if it was draft-y. In a few years, if Zach and I feel like making the show again, we'll dig them out and see if they're worth making or if we want to start fresh again," Cusack stated. While an eventual return remains a possibility if the creators ever feel inclined to revisit the series, no new episodes are currently in production. For now, Hadel and Cusack are shifting their focus to new endeavors, with Hadel noting they are already collaborating on a smaller, new project.
