Slay the Spire 2 Dominates Steam as PC Gamer Panel Shares Strongest Opinions After Hundreds of Hours
With hundreds of hours logged in the early access release of Slay the Spire 2, PC Gamer editors and writers share their sharpest thoughts on deckbuilding balance, character design, and multiplayer features.

Slay the Spire 2 has established itself as a massive success on Steam since its launch. Drawing hundreds of thousands of concurrent players at release, the title has shattered genre records and established itself as a prominent card game on the platform. Following several months of early access availability, a panel of editors and writers has gathered to share their strongest opinions on the game's design, card mechanics, and overall balance.
Among the primary points of discussion is the structure of Act 1. Austin Wood, a senior writer at GamesRadar+, notes that the opening act currently feels overly punishing and structurally rigid. Players are frequently forced into conservative playstyles, relying on resting at every opportunity to survive unavoidable damage and health checks. According to the panel, this balance skews early choices heavily toward explosive relics like the Silver Crucible and the Miniature Tent, leaving little room for aggressive pathing or drafting unless a player spikes high within the first few floors.
Character design and individual mechanics also drew detailed critique from the panel. Evan Lahti, strategic director at PC Gamer, highlights the synergy-heavy nature of basic builds like Shiv and Sly, praising their low-input, high-output dynamic. Conversely, Lahti points out that the character Regent presents a thematic clash between his goofy, cosmic aesthetic and a slow, methodical playstyle that requires extensive star-accounting over multiple turns. Similarly, the Necrobinder's Doom mechanic was criticized for feeling too similar to traditional enemy elimination, while minor enemies like Mytes introduce frustrating split-objective pressure by littering player decks with toxic cards.
Multiplayer features also received attention as development continues. While initial impressions of co-op play felt underwhelming due to scaled-up enemy health pools and longer session times, editors noted that experiencing absurd builds created by other players offers a surprising amount of enjoyment. However, critics argue that the multiplayer mode will not fully reach its potential until it receives dedicated mechanics, enemies, and relics specifically designed for cooperative teamwork rather than basic health scaling.
