Sega believes that live-action films have played a major role in repopularizing the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and directly contributing to game sales. Series producer Takashi Iizuka discussed the impact of other media on the franchise during an interview at the Tokyo Game Show.

According to Iizuka, awareness of the Sonic series has grown thanks to the live-action movies directed by Jeff Fowler. More people around the world have become interested in Sonic as a character and in the games. Stronger game sales ultimately provide Sega with more resources when making the next title, allowing the team to deliver higher quality games in a positive cycle.

In addition to films, Iizuka pointed to anime and streaming platforms like Netflix as important tools for expanding the brand. Working with global platforms allows Sega to distribute content worldwide without needing approval from traditional television broadcasters. Iizuka also noted that transmedia projects do not draw resources away from game developers, ensuring that new video games are not delayed by movie or television production.
