Secret of the Pyramid Builders Brings Ancient Egypt to Life in VR

Experiencing the Pyramids of Giza firsthand remains out of reach for most people, but Excurio's latest VR project aims to bridge that gap. Secret of the Pyramid Builders is a free-roaming immersive VR experience designed to teach visitors about the construction methods of Ancient Egypt's most iconic structures using the latest scientific discoveries.

The experience debuted at Japan's Immersive Journey, a VR venue dedicated to historical exploration, earlier this summer and is now accessible at other locations worldwide. It continues Excurio's educational approach to VR, building on the studio's prior work including Horizon of Khufu, which explored the purpose of the pyramids and the pharaoh's journey to the afterlife.

Secret of the Pyramid Builders distinguishes itself by grounding its narrative in modern scientific research, particularly the ScanPyramids project's technological breakthroughs. For centuries, pyramid construction methods remained speculative, with theories like external ramps seeming impractical given the structures' massive scale. Recent scanning technology has revealed unexplained internal spaces called "voids," leading scientists to propose new theories such as internal ramp systems. The experience visualizes these competing theories, allowing visitors to understand the scientific debate rather than simply being told conclusions.

Players use HTC Vive headsets and physically walk through a large tracked space to progress through the narrative. Hand tracking provides spatial awareness without direct world interaction. The experience casts visitors as tour guests accompanied by Mona, a young Egyptologist, and references the narrative of the prior Excurio experience, though prior familiarity is not required. Visitors encounter historical details including depictions of Egyptian ships delivering limestone casing stones and actual hieroglyphic texts discovered by archaeologists on pyramid remnants.

The experience prioritizes clarity between established fact and ongoing scientific debate. Casing stone materials and construction processes are presented as historical fact, while competing theories about ramp placement and void purposes are visually represented and discussed as areas of active inquiry. The design uses open spaces with multiple focal points rather than cramped corridors, and other players appear as particles to prevent collisions in the shared physical space.
