Scott Pilgrim EX: Bringing Three New Heroes to Life in Back in the Band DLC

Tribute Games has released the Back in the Band DLC for Scott Pilgrim EX, reuniting the full Sex Bob-omb lineup by adding three new playable characters: Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau. According to the developers, the goal was to ensure each newcomer felt mechanically and visually integrated into the game, utilizing detailed 2D animation contributions from Samantha Lhoir and Artem Samoilov.

Updating the Character Select screen presented the first design hurdle. Artist Artem Samoilov crafted the expanded roster layout to maintain visual balance while emphasizing the additions. Every selection idle animation was framed as a minor performance reflecting each fighter's distinct persona. Kim Pine exhibits quiet confidence and attitude, Knives Chau shows restless energy, and Stephen Stills appears relaxed alongside a brief, subtle moment of surprise. Early concept sketches focused on posture, silhouette, and personality before transitioning into final pixel art that aligns with Bryan Lee O'Malley's original characters.

Combat design for Knives Chau centered on a fast hit-and-run fighting style that prioritizes mobility, speed, and continuous pressure. Her scarf functions as both an aesthetic choice and an offensive weapon to extend attack reach and accentuate acrobatic movement, allowing her to pair rapid knife strikes with swift getaways. Scott Pilgrim EX and its Back in the Band downloadable content are available now on PlayStation platforms.
