Sandbox Games Dominate Steam Earnings, Study Finds, While RPGs and FPS Remain Major Contenders
A new analysis of 98,555 Steam games reveals sandbox titles like Palworld lead revenue charts, though RPGs and FPS games still command significant market share.
Steam's gaming economy is increasingly dominated by sandbox titles, according to a recent study analyzing 98,555 priced games on the platform. The report, compiled by We Love It—a Steam browsing platform that leverages generative AI—finds that sandbox games are among the highest earners, with titles like Palworld generating approximately $500 million since its 2024 early access launch. This places Palworld in the "top 0.00% of all paid games on Steam," according to the analysis.
The study, led by We Love It's team including Ichiro Lambe (co-creator of Steam Labs), marketing lead Matt Martindale, and engineer Dr. Tim Ermilov, highlights that 27.6% of sandbox games achieve at least $100,000 in revenue. This contrasts with 21.8% for first-person shooters and 19.5% for role-playing games, underscoring the genre's financial strength. However, the report emphasizes that the majority of games struggle financially: the median lifetime earnings across nearly 100,000 analyzed titles was a meager $3,631, with half of all paid games earning less.
While sandbox games dominate the upper echelon, RPGs and FPS titles remain critical to Steam's ecosystem. The study notes that visual novels, despite failing to break into the top five genres by $100,000 revenue threshold, achieved a median of $7,012—closely trailing sandbox games' $7,973. The report concludes that the top 1% of games earn 84.5% of estimated revenue, illustrating the platform's extreme winner-take-most dynamic.
