Rockstar Boss Explains Why GTA 6 Changes How NPCs React to Weapons Compared to GTA 5
Rockstar North's Rob Nelson explains that Grand Theft Auto 6 changes how NPCs react to drawn weapons because GTA 5's approach does not work at modern resolutions.
Rockstar North joint boss and development lead Rob Nelson has discussed how Grand Theft Auto 6 handles weapon carrying and non-player character reactions, contrasting the upcoming game with Grand Theft Auto 5. In traditional series fashion, past open-world entries allowed players to run around with heavy weaponry out of sight, pulling out items like rocket launchers or shotguns without drawing immediate panic from crowds. According to Nelson, that older approach no longer functions effectively with current technological fidelity and behavioral expectations.
Speaking to TGG, Nelson explained that the older style would look jarring given the increased realism and behavioral sophistication of GTA 6's world. As shown in media like the GTA 6: An Extended Look showcase, the game's inhabitants organically react when protagonists Lucia and Jason brandish firearms. If players grip a handgun tightly, nearby inhabitants will cautiously walk away, while police might antagonize players swinging rifles around.
Weapon management has also been updated to reflect this shift. Players can consistently carry two concealed handguns, but long guns are handled differently. Players can carry two long guns, but they will be visible on characters' backs and in their hands rather than hidden out of sight in pockets. One long gun can be placed in an off hand and another on the back. Nelson notes that simply having a long gun on your back should be fine, but holding one in your hand will cause people to react and move away.
