Rocket League is moving to Unreal Engine 6, with Psyonix announcing a 2027 launch for the upgraded version. The developer revealed the transition during the final day of the 2026 RLCS World Championship, marking a major shift for the competitive esports title.
The game, originally built on Unreal Engine 3 when it released in 2015, will undergo a comprehensive rebuild. Psyonix confirmed that professional esports players are directly involved in testing and shaping the next era of Rocket League. Players such as JSTN and GARRETTG have been testing the game and will continue to do so in the coming months as development progresses.
This upgrade represents Rocket League leading the charge into a new generation of game development technology. Epic Games released Unreal Engine 5 in 2022, and Unreal Engine 6 now offers tools and capabilities that Psyonix believes will benefit the competitive experience. Epic has indicated that AI will play a significant role in the new engine's technology.
Professional player involvement in testing reflects Psyonix's commitment to maintaining competitive integrity and ensuring the esports ecosystem remains viable through the transition. The developers are rebuilding the game from the ground up rather than simply porting existing content.
