Riot Games to End Active Development on League of Legends Spinoff 2XKO at the End of 2026

Riot Games has announced it will wind down active development on its League of Legends fighting game 2XKO by the end of 2026, citing a lack of sustainable player retention.

Riot Games has announced that active development on 2XKO, its free-to-play League of Legends fighting game spinoff, will officially conclude at the end of 2026. According to the studio, the decision comes after monitoring the game's trajectory and determining that it failed to achieve a sustainable player base and retention rate.

While the studio noted that a dedicated community embraced the title, engagement remained relatively flat despite major updates, and the game costs substantially more to operate than it brings in. This follows earlier workforce reductions that saw approximately 80 developers laid off following the game's launch window.

Despite the end of active development, Riot Games has confirmed that servers will remain online beyond 2026, and the game will continue to be playable offline. To provide a soft landing for players, Riot is implementing several immediate changes. All characters are being unlocked for players, and any money spent on the game on or before August 20 will be fully refunded while allowing players to keep their purchases.

A final roadmap of updates is scheduled for the remainder of the year. An upcoming patch on September 8 will introduce Lux as a playable character, accompanied by a new $40/£33.99 bundle containing all champion skins, chromas, and taunts. Ranked mode is also being removed to streamline matchmaking into a single pool per server, while casual lobbies will continue to be skill-matched. A final major patch in October is set to add Samira to the roster before development concludes in December.
