Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Brings Action, Mythology, and Sophia to Xbox Game Pass

Asobo Studio has provided new details on Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy during an appearance on the Official Xbox Podcast. Scheduled for release on August 27, the upcoming title shifts focus away from previous protagonists Amicia and Hugo, instead centering its story on Sophia, a supporting character who survived the events of 2022's A Plague Tale: Requiem.

According to lead producer Eric Chort, the development team spent seven or eight years working on the story of Hugo and Amicia. Following the emotional conclusion of Requiem, the team at Asobo Studio in Bordeaux, France, considered how to continue the franchise without those characters while challenging themselves with a new style of gameplay. Because they wanted a more dynamic experience featuring active combat, choosing Sophia as the new protagonist proved to be a logical and straightforward decision early in development.

Unlike previous entries in the franchise that emphasized stealth and avoiding conflict, Resonance leans heavily into direct action and melee combat. Chort noted that while Amicia was not suited for sword fighting, Sophia enters the game with a direct style utilizing dual blades. The development team designed the combat system to be reactive and smooth on the controller, allowing players to dodge and attack quickly as Sophia faces numerous enemies.

The game also introduces elements of Greek mythology, incorporating concepts such as a minotaur and a maze into its universe. Chort explained that the studio used historical sites and real-world Greek architecture as a factual foundation, then blended those historical locations with their own lore and elements inspired by myth.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is coming to Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Game Pass.
