Resident Evil Movie Director Zach Cregger Reacts to Backlash, Admits He Was 'Naive'

Director Zach Cregger has addressed the ongoing backlash surrounding his upcoming Resident Evil film adaptation, admitting in recent interviews that he was naive to expect an immediate warm embrace from the franchise's fanbase. Speaking with IGN and The Playlist, Cregger reflected on the heavy criticism and skepticism he has faced from players unhappy with his creative direction and the omission of certain narratives.

"I was naive," Cregger said, explaining that he initially thought fellow fans of the games would be thrilled to see someone developing a dedicated survival horror movie for the franchise. Cregger also addressed fans disappointed by the absence of Leon S. Kennedy's narrative, stating he understands the frustration and apologizing that his film tells a different story. He noted that he shares a similar critical attitude toward earlier film adaptations in the franchise, which he admitted he hasn't watched because they do not reflect the Resident Evil he loves.

Addressing the press tour for the project, Cregger remarked that the frequent negativity has made promotional duties feel more like an "apology tour." Despite the resistance from some members of the community, Cregger emphasized that his film is coming from a genuine place of love for the source material, rather than being an unrelated story that merely uses the franchise name to secure a budget. He urged skeptics to watch the movie and judge it for themselves once it hits theaters.

Looking beyond the immediate release, Cregger noted he has already considered where future stories in the universe could go, though he emphasized that audiences should wait to see how the upcoming film performs. At the same time, Cregger indicated that he plans to step away from franchise filmmaking after this project, intending to focus exclusively on original films moving forward, with a sci-fi project titled The Flood lined up next. The upcoming Resident Evil movie is scheduled to release in theaters on September 18 and stars Austin Abrams as a medical courier arriving in Raccoon City.
